MTN Nigeria has launched a music-streaming platform named “MusicTime!”. This was contained in a press release sent to Nairametrics.

According to MTN, MusicTime! allows passionate music lovers to choose from millions of songs available across the globe. The App launched last December in South Africa and has garnered mixed reviews since then.

About MusicTime: Users of the streaming service can instantly stream music even if they have no data on their phones. The company also claims the service has no subscription cost but that what you pay for is “the time spent listening to music on the platform.”

MTN MusicTime developed the streaming service in partnership with Simfy Africa and claims to offer the best listening experience in local and international music.

Making the announcement, the Chief Operating Officer of MTN Nigeria, Mazen Mroue said, “MTN Nigeria is proud to launch yet another service that is focused on customer satisfaction and digital inclusion. We know that music is a big part of the Nigerian culture, and in recent times, we have seen talented Nigerians take the world by storm through the fantastic music they create. MusicTime! is a platform that ensures  accessibility to these great Nigerian and African music across the world.”

 He went further by saying, “We are creating the right channels and ecosystems that will help Nigerians create, play and share their boundless creativity with the rest of the world without limitations or barriers. By providing an avenue for local musicians to stream their music to a global audience while still maintaining a strong local bond, MusicTime! will complement the efforts of the government in the actualisation of its local musical content drive.”

What this means: MTN’s transformation from a data and voice business to a utility company with vast product offerings is on full throttle. The company is basically sweating its platform across board leveraging on its vast userbase to sell everything from data, to voice, mobile money, mobile banking, Fintech and now music streaming. Interesting to also note that the company chose a payment model that focusses on how much time you spend streaming than an actual subscription. This is a variant model Nigerians have been pushing cable TV giant Multichoice to adopt.

MusicTime currently has about 100k+ downloads on the Google PlayStore and listed under the name of Simfy Africa.
