Dangote to empower Nigerian women with N1.1 billion

The Aliko Dangote Foundation is set to empower 106,000 women across four states in Nigeria with about N1.1 billion as part of its empowerment program before the end of the year.
The initiative, which is part of the Dangote Micro-Grant scheme, is aimed at poverty amelioration through economic empowerment of women. It will actively target and empower 23,000 women in Sokoto, 34,000 women in Katsina, 21,000 women in Kebbi and 28,000 women in Zamfara.
The beneficiaries of this program are selected from communities with primary consideration for vulnerable women, food distressed household with infant or children under-five-year-old, disabled, divorcee, widows, extremely poor residents in these communities.

What you should know: According to a report by the World Poverty Clock, Nigeria has overtaken India as the country with the most extreme poor people in the world. 86.9 million Nigerians of the estimated 180 million population have now be said to be living in extreme poverty. A quarter of very poor people in the world will be Nigerians. This is probably why the Dangote foundation has taken it upon itself to focus on poverty alleviation by disbursing funds to lift more citizens out of extreme poverty.

About the scheme: The Dangote Micro-Grant scheme grants is one of the empowerment programs of Aliko Dangote Foundation. It was launched in 2011 in Kano State and it’s a N10 Billion project, targeting indigenous and vulnerable women. It has been systematically rolled out nationwide to cover 774 Local Government Areas in the country.
So far, 334,500 women and youths have benefitted from the program across Kano,
Jigawa, Kogi, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Lagos, Nasarawa and Niger states.
