It is fortunate that between the supporters of the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and those of Pastor Ize-Iyamu, Edo people very well know which group has the penchant for engaging thugs to unleash mayhem on the public and members of the opposition party.
With serious crisis emerging in the Edo APC from the distribution of a largesse of N25m to party leaders across the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State, which is to rent a massive crowd at the campaign launch for the Edo State governorship poll, the APC has released a report putting the blame on the PDP for the in-fighting within the different groups in their party.
The infighting within the ranks of APC and EPM has deteriorated to clashes among the different groups that have promised each person with as much N6,000 for turning up to make up a crowd of 4,000 people planned for the rally. After receiving only N1,000, many of those who have been mobilized have threatened not to attend. Not being able to account for their share of the N25m largesse, some ward leaders have resorted to blackmail and threats to save the situation.
Ize-Iyamu, who was yesterday, presented by President Buhari as the APC candidate for the September 19 election, is desperate to ensure a jam-packed turnout at the launch. In an attempt to impress the party leaders in Abuja so that he would get more of the federal support, Ize-Iyamu resorted to crowd-renting to fill up the expansive University of Benin Sports Complex venue. This would not be the first time POI and EPM is paying to mobilize support for their party candidate.
Several polls conducted have indicated that Ize-Iyamu enjoys less than 20% and remains unpopular among Edo people. His principal, a former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole has done irreparable damage to the APC candidate’s reputation within the party and in the public purview.
Doling out cash incentives and promises of government’s positions, they have been making offers to anybody that is ready to join their unholy plot to subvert the will of Edo people. They are ready to go to any lengths to do anything that would discredit Governor Obaseki and increase their chances at the poll.
The accusations being levelled at the PDP of infiltrating their ranks and creating disturbances is another one of their deceptive machinations at tarnishing the image of the opposition. Like all other such attempts, this too is dead on arrival.
