…stresses that only selfish, callous people will adopt direct primary amid a pandemic
As criticisms mount over the adoption of direct primary method in the selection of All Progressives Congress’s flag bearer for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State, by the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC), a former special Adviser to Oshiomhole, Michael Egharevba, has described the National Chairman as callous.
Egharevba, who was Special Adviser on local Government Affairs to Oshiomhole when the latter was Edo State governor, said: “Oshiomhole and a handful of NWC members are more interested in power grabbing for their selfish interests while not caring about the lives of Nigerians who are faced with the COVID-19 pandemic.”
In a statement to stakeholders in Benin City, he queried the NWC: “If the nation has deemed it necessary not to open schools which is more important for the future of our children and development of the nation, why would the NWC members ignore the potential dangers that overcrowding will cause to the lives of Nigerians?”
The APC chieftain decried the Oshiomhole-led NWC’s unmitigated desire to grab power by all means, even if the method poses a great threat to people’s lives.
He stressed that such an attitude is not what Nigeria needs at the moment, when thousands of lives have been lost across the world to the coronavirus disease.
Egharevba maintained that the NWC, again, failed a simple test of our common humanity and fellow feeling, and urged well meaning leaders of the APC to call Oshiomhole to order.
He explained that “the indirect primary method of selecting candidates for elections as adopted by the state executive committee exists and remains the preferred method at a time like this”, and urged the NWC to adopt it without further delay.
